The Sindh High Court in Pakistan has ruled in favor of PTV and ARY Group, barring Geo Super from broadcasting Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches due to a breach of contract.
Barrister Ayyan Memon, representing ARY, confirmed that Geo Super had requested permission to broadcast PSL matches, but their reduced bid in the bidding process had led to the breach of contract.
The court’s verdict means that Geo Super is now prohibited from airing PSL 8 matches, and any attempt to do so would be considered contempt of court.
The court’s decision took into account the PSL rights agreement signed between PTV and ARY/A Sport. Lawyers representing both PTV and Geo Super were present during the verdict. Geo News, which is operated by the Jang Group, is also the media partner of the defending champions, Lahore Qalandars.
This ruling is a reminder of the importance of abiding by contractual agreements, and it emphasizes the consequences of not doing so. It is a victory for PTV and ARY, who can now continue to exclusively broadcast PSL matches in Pakistan.
This decision has implications for future media rights negotiations, as parties must now be more vigilant in adhering to contractual obligations to avoid similar legal challenges in the future.
